Work to start in May on Andermatt project
Construction work on an ambitious plan to redevelop the mountain resort of Andermatt is set to begin soon, with an initial investment of SFr60 million ($55.7 million).
The idea for a luxury “CO2 neutral” village, which will include a hotel, sports complex and 18-hole golf course, is the brainchild of Egyptian billionaire Samih Sawiris.
The focus of the building work at the foot of the Gotthard massif will be on the hotel named The Chedi, the golf course and infrastructure, the project leaders told local residents on Friday.
Construction work for the hotel starts in May and will require the removal of 60,000 cubic metres of material, enough to fill 6,000 trucks.
Around 200 holes are to be drilled for geothermic piles during the summer months according to Andermatt Swiss Alps, which is responsible for the development, planning realisation and future operation of the new village.
Project managers say that work will also be carried out to clean up land around a disused military training area and arms depot.
