Wins for Federer and Schnyder
Switzerland's Roger Federer and Patty Schnyder both celebrated first round wins at their respective tennis tournaments on Tuesday.
Federer (ATP 14) came through a tough-looking first round draw at the Masters Series event in Hamburg to beat Ecuadorian clay-court specialist Nicolas Lapentti (ATP 29) in straight sets (6-1, 6-4).
Despite his impressive world ranking position, the young Swiss number one has yet to really impress on clay and will be relieved to have won on Tuesday after his early exits in Rome and Monte Carlo.
Schnyder (WTA 20) was also a straight sets winner on Tuesday, seeing off Slovakia's Janette Husarova (WTA 40) 6-2, 6-3 at the Italian Open in Rome.
The win saw Schnyder avenge her loss to Husarova during Switzerland's narrow Fed Cup defeat in Bratislava last month.
The Swiss women's number two is now set to take on former French Open winner Mary Pierce (WTA 172) in the second round. The 27-year-old Frenchwoman, who is battling her way back up the rankings after a series of injuries, has already claimed one Swiss scalp this week after beating Marie-Gaïané Mikaelian on Monday.
