Wawrinka, the world's 10th-ranked player, defeated Cañas 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-2). He will now take on Romanian Victor Hanescu in the semifinal.

As in his second round match against fellow Swiss and 137th-ranked Stéphane Bohli, Wawkinka played it close, coming within two points of elimination.

Bohli himself had scored his first win on the ATP tour on Tuesday with a three-set win over another Swiss player, Robin Roshardt.

Wawrinka lost in his fourth-round match against Marat Safin at Wimbledon earlier this month.
