It is the first time the 24-year-old from Davos has won a place amongst the top three in international racing, and only the second time in history a Swiss has accomplished the feat.
The last time was in Calgary 1987 when Evi Kratzer won the ten kilometre cross country race.
Van der Graaff’s previous personal best came last February when she placed 21st in Rybinsk, Russia.
Kikkan Randall of the United States and Russia’s Natalia Mateeva won first and second places in the sprint event respectively.
