Sales in its core businesses of Information Technology, Surface Technology and Component Special Systems rose by 38 per cent to SFr1.84 billion.

In a statement, the company said: "For the business year as a whole, we continue to expect a positive development for sales and profits as well as a significant improvement on the prior year."

The figures released on Wednesday included for the first time the majority-owned producer of semiconductor manufacturing equipment, Esec, which was fully consolidated in September.

Unaxis, formerly Oerlikon-Bührle, is in the process of selling its Pilatus light aircraft unit and hopes to find a buyer by the end of the year.

The company's shares joined the Swiss Market Index at the beginning of the month.
