Tunnels get good marks

Switzerland's performance contrasted with a general deterioration in standards, with a third of the 31 tunnels surveyed failing the European Tunnel Test 2008 – the worst result for five years.

The tunnels at Mappo Morettina, Flüelen and San Bernardino were all considered "very good", the tunnel at Ligerz was "good" and another at Sachseln "sufficient". Improvements are planned at both Ligerz and Sachseln.

The 11-nation tunnel survey was conducted by the European Tunnel Assessment Programme (EuroTAP), a project supported by the FIA federation of automobile clubs and 19 European motoring associations including the TCS.

The best of the 31 tunnels was the Pont Pla Tunnel in Andorra la Vella. The Cernobbio Tunnel in Italy was considered the most dangerous road tunnel in Europe, the fourth year running that an Italian tunnel has been rated bottom of the class.
