Despite a modest time of 1:05.63, the rider from Buchs was able to see off his nearest competitors, Martial Heer, and Michael Lato. It was the second time that Merk has won the title, following his earlier triumph in 1998.

The former title-holder, Franco Marvulli, did not enter himself in the one kilometre event this year. He is however competing in the 4000 metres pursuit in which he is already through to next Tuesday's semi-finals.

Merk will also be back in action next week, as he chases a second title in the 200 metres sprint. In Monday's semi-finals he will again have to get the better of Heer.

In the women's Omnium, Martina Nöthiger leads Dominique Marten and Magali Pache after two disciplines.
