The digital revolution

This content was published on November 28, 2003 minutes

The third industrial revolution is well underway. Over the past 15 years, information and communication technologies (ICTs) have increasingly become a part of our daily lives.
But not everyone is part of this emerging information society - the digital divide between "haves" and "have nots" is growing, leaving billions of people literally cut off from the rest of the world.
In an effort to bridge this gap, the United Nations is holding the first World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) in Geneva from December 10 to 12.
As the driving force behind the event, Switzerland is taking up its first global challenge since joining the UN last year.
