Bears make a comeback in Bern

On May 26, the Swiss canton of Bern got its first confirmed bear sighting in more than 190 years. The animal was spotted in the municipality of Eriz and is believed to be a young male. The bear is very symbolic to the region: it is present on the cantonal coat of arms and the city of Bern’s bear park is a popular tourist attraction. The last bear in Switzerland was shot in 1904. However, since 2005 they have occasionally entered the country from neighbouring Italy. Jagdinspektorat des Kantons Bern
