The Group B match in Kosice’s Steel Arena had to be interrupted for several minutes in the third period due to a power blackout.

France looked better than Sean Simpson's Swiss team for the first two periods, with Swiss goaltender Tobias Stephan managing to stop 29 shots for the shutout.

Julien Vauclair of Lugano forced the 1-0 win in a solo effort 1.46 minutes into sudden death overtime.

"I Iike that kind of play. I just took my chance, ran over and scored," he said later.

In the Group A match in Bratislava, Germany beat Russia in a 2-0 upset.

Switzerland reached the quarterfinals of the 2010 championship.
