Auphan, who holds dual Swiss and French nationality, is due to start her new job on January 1 2002. She left her post as director of the Geneva theatre at the start of the summer.

Born in Marseilles, Auphan began her career in the southern port city as an assistant director at the opera house. In 1983 she directed the Lausanne Festival, and assumed the top job at the Lausanne Opera House in October 1984, leaving her post there in June 1995.

Of the 50 candidates for the Marseilles job, the mayor said there "emerged three significant contenders". Those included Thierry Fouquet, director of the Bordeaux Theatre, Michael MacLeod, director of the City of London, and Auphan.

Auphan succeeds Jean-Louis Pujol.
