Swiss skier, Beltrametti, takes second place in downhill
The Swiss skier, Silvano Beltrametti, has clinched second place in a World Cup downhill race in the Canadian mountain resort of Lake Louise.
Beltrametti's finishing time of one minute 41.03 seconds put him just behind Austria's Stephan Eberharter, who cruised to victory in Saturday's race with a time of 1:40:79.
"I do not regret not having won the race, as I have a long career ahead of me, and will have lots more chances to catch up," Beltrametti said after the race.
He added: "I stayed very calm, in order to concentrate, because I knew that if I performed to the best of my capabilities, I could be among the top finishers."
Beltrametti crossed the finishing line ahead of Norway's Lasse Kjus, who finished third, clocking 1:41:21.
The race's strong favourite, Austrian Hermann Maier, had a highly disappointing race, finishing 10th after catching an edge and nearly crashing.
On the women's front, Switzerland's skiers performed less well on Saturday: Sonja Nef failed to make the podium, finishing fourth in a World Cup slalom race in Aspen, Colorado.
