It was Lüthi's best ever result in the 250 cc category.
Lüthi led the race for most of the first half, but was overtaken by Alvaro Bautista of Spain. Although Lüthi subsequently regained the lead, towards the end Bautista managed to overtake again and finished 4.6 seconds ahead.
No Swiss has won a race this category of grand prix since Jacques Cornu in 1989.
Lüthi remains in ninth place in the overall world rankings, with 77 points to his credit.
Lüthi, who is now 21, was world champion in the 125 cc category in 2005.
