Sun shines on Geneva companies
Two Geneva firms have been awarded the European Solar Prize for their promotion of renewable energy.
The solar-panel production company, SES, and the public utility, SIG, were cited for the decision to construct Switzerland's first solar-powered plant.
The roof panels are designed to provide 548,000kWh of power annually at the SES plant in the canton Geneva community of Plan-les Ouates.
SES already captured this year's Swiss Solar Prize. It manufacturers standard solar panels, but also cells that can be architecturally integrated into building roofs and windows.
Since 1994 Eurosolar, the European Association for Renewable Energies, has been awarding prizes to municipalities, companies, and individuals and to organisations promoting the use of renewable energy.
The Basel-based non-profit organisation, sun21, captured a Eurosolar prize last year, as did Swiss doctor and environmentalist Martin Vosseler for crossing the Atlantic Ocean in a solar-powered catamaran sailboat.
