In Connecticut, Schnyder upset eighth-seeded Frenchwoman, Julie Halard-Decugis 6-3, 7-6 (7-5). The Swiss will play Russia's Elena Dementieva in the next round. In her last outing in Montreal, Schnyder suffered a heavy defeat against America's Serena Williams.

On Long Island, Bastl got past Germany's unseeded David Prinosil in three sets, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3. The Swiss player had never played against the German, who was a semi-finalist in Washington last week. Bastl has only won two of his last 10 matches. His next game will be against the Frenchman, Arnaud Clément.

Meanwhile, two Swiss players will definitely not be playing in the US Open. Lorenzo Manta and Ivo Heuberger have not made it through the qualifications. Manta went down in the first round against the Italian, Giorgio Galimberti 6-3, 6-7 (3-7), 6-4. Heuberger lost to Canada's Sébastien Lareau 5-7, 7-5, 5-7.

The US Open starts next Monday.
