Small climb for Mikaelian

Marie-Gaïané Mikaelian's first ever title triumph on the WTA tour has been rewarded with a climb of just one place in the world rankings.

The 18-year-old from Lausanne celebrated her maiden title on Sunday after a straight sets win over Tatiana Poutchek in the final of the Tashkent Open.

The result saw Mikaelian creep up from 50th in the world rankings to 49th.

Ironically, Mikaelian was prevented from rocketing up the rankings because of the fact that she also did well in Tashkent last year when she reached the tournament semi-finals.

Under the WTA's 12-month system, the young Swiss was deprived of the ranking points which she won last year - lessening the effect of winning Sunday's final.

Mikaelian's small rise has helped to preserve Emmanuelle Gagliardi's status as Swiss women's number three - for the time being. The 25-year-old Genevan is now just two places ahead of Mikaelian in the standings.

Switzerland's top two women experienced no change in Monday's rankings. Despite still being in recovery from her recent foot operation, Martina Hingis has held onto ninth place, while Patty Schnyder remains 18th in the world.

On the men's front Swiss number one Roger Federer has moved up one place to ninth in the ATP standings after reaching the semi-finals of the grass-court tournament in Halle, Germany.

Bern's Michel Kratochvil, who went out in the second round of the same event, remains 46th in the men's world rankings.
