Switzerland has too few skilled workers
It seems that there are not enough Swiss professionals who specialise in mathematics, information technology, natural sciences and engineering.
That’s according to a 50-page government report released on Wednesday. It looks into the current situation plus the causes and possible consequences of the shortage.
Between 2004 and 2009, the employers reacted to the problem by raising salaries and recruiting more specialist workers from abroad.
Within Switzerland, the number of recent graduates in these fields has been modest, and the number of women pursuing science and technology degrees is markedly low.
The cabinet recommends that primary and secondary schools foster a better understanding of these subjects to encourage both boys and girls to consider careers in these fields.
In the report the cabinet said it would support measures to boost education, research and innovation between 2013 and 2016.
