Flu virus tally leaps in 24 hours
There have been 30 new confirmed cases of the H1N1 flu virus within a 24-hour period in Switzerland, health authorities announced on Tuesday.
The new infections raised the Swiss tally to 178 confirmed cases of the virus, known as swine flu, spread out over 19 of the 26 cantons.
Canton Valais was the hardest hit in the latest wave of infections, with 16 cases. A school with 120 pupils has been put in quarantine. There were also six new cases in Geneva.
The Swiss government has ordered 13 million doses of vaccine to mitigate the impact of the pandemic. It expects up to 1.5 million people - a quarter of the work force - to be infected in the projected autumn pandemic.
But the vaccine is not expected to be available in Switzerland until October.
