Artificial reproduction on the rise
More and more Swiss couples are seeking artificial or partially artificial help to bear children.
According to the Federal Statistics Office, around 5,400 couples last year made use of one form or another of assisted reproductive technology – a 13 per cent rise on 2006.
The Statistics Office said on Monday that around 1.6 of every 1,000 women in Switzerland of child bearing age undergoes treatment.
About one in every three women undergoing such treatment becomes pregnant.
The male partner's infertility was the most common reason for treatment.
In three of every four cases, an in vitro fertilisation procedure known as Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) was carried out.
A single sperm is injected directly into the egg in this method, and is most commonly used to overcome male infertility problems.
