Schnyder and Vögele out early in Turkey tennis
Switzerland's Patty Schnyder has been knocked out of the first round of the Istanbul Cup.
The number-two seed lost on Tuesday to Rossana De los Rios of Paraguay 7-6 (3), 2-6, 6-3 at the hard-court contest. The defeat marked the sixth time out of 15 tournaments so far this year that the Swiss has suffered a first-round defeat.
"The game did not go the way I wanted," said Schnyder, who appeared to be frustrated at times during the match. "I made too many mistakes. This is what happens when you cannot train sufficiently."
Switzerland's Stefanie Vögele, currently ranked 75th, lost to Urzsula Radwanska of Poland 6-2, 7-6. She and Schnyder, ranked 19th in the world, were the two best women players from Switzerland at the tournament.
Top-seeded Vera Zvonareva of Russia was also knocked out in the first round with a loss to Mariya Koryttseva of Ukraine 2-6, 6-1, 4-6.
In men's tennis, Switzerland's top-seed Stanislas Wawrinka, ranked 18th overall, beat Federico del Bonis of Argentina 6-4, 7-5 in the first round of the Allianz Suisse Open in Gstaad.
