Marc Rosset and Patty Schnyder have provided Switzerland's tennis fans with some consolation, on a day when Swiss players fared badly at Wimbledon. Schnyder and Rosset both beat their opponents in straight sets to qualify for the second round.

Rosset had been widely tipped to struggle in his encounter with the Argentine, Franco Squillari, after failing to get beyond the second round at last week's Nottingham Open. Squillari, on the other hand, appeared to be in great form after reaching the semi final of the French Open.

However, Rosset was in control for most of the first round match, taking the first two sets 7-5, 6-3. The final set was more closely-fought, ending in a tie-break which Rosset won 7-4.

No such luck for Roger Federer, who lost in straight sets to Russia's Yevgeny Kafelnikov. Kafelnikov won the hard fought match, 7-5, 7-5, 7-6 (8-6).

George Bastl likewise failed to dominate the Netherlands' Sjeng Schalken, who gained a straight sets win, 6-2, 6-4, 6-2.

In women's play on Tuesday, Patty Schnyder had few difficulties booking her place in the second round. The Swiss number two saw off Italy's Thatiana Garbin in straight sets 6-3, 6-2.

But compatriot Miroslava Vavrinec went down to Russia's Yelena Likhovtseva 3-6, 6-3, 6-1.

Emmanuelle Gagliardi lost her match against Argentine Paola Suarez, 6-4, 6-4.

In the second round, Schnyder joins Switzerland's world number one, Martina Hingis, who won her opening match on Monday by crushing the little-known Spaniard, Angeles Montolio 6-1 6-2.
