This content was published on December 14, 2001 - 19:26

The 20-year-old from Ticino knocked more than four seconds off her previous best time in a 25-metre pool to win Friday's race in 8'17"20.

Rigamonti's time also set a new European short course record and was enough to see her beat her nearest opponent, Slovenia's Anja Carnan, by more than three seconds.

Disappointment for Strasser

There was disappointment though for Rigamonti's close friend and compatriot Chantal Strasser. Tipped as a strong contender to join Rigamonti on the podium, Strasser had to settle for fifth place, missing out on third spot my more than nine seconds.
