Renowned Swiss mountaineer and photographer, Dölf Reist, dies
The distinguished climber and photographer, Dölf Reist, has died at the age of 79. Reist, who came from Berne, is credited as being the first man to scale the highest summits of all five continents in succession.
In May 1956, Reist took part in the first Swiss expedition to conquer the Himalayan peak, Lhotse - the fourth highest peak in the world. Five days later, his team became the second to reach the summit of Everest, the highest mountain in the world.
As well as being a mountaineer, Reist was also an accomplished photographer. He lugged his camera up and down some of the world's highest peaks, capturing the beauty and atmosphere of the mountain wilderness.
From the late-1970s, Reist spent most of his time trekking and touring, but his favourite destination remained Nepal, to which he returned 25 times.
