The Geneva-based organisation confirmed on Tuesday that seven Congolese and one Swiss national had been seized by the Mai Mai Yakutumba rebels in the South Kivu town of Fizi on Friday afternoon.

ICRC spokesman Marcal Izard said that his organisation had been in touch with some of the victims; he declined to say whether it had talked with the kidnappers.

The Swiss foreign ministry said it was aware of the situation and that it had been in contact with both the ICRC as well as the Congolese authorities.
