Red Cross ship reaches Misrata
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) is extending its activities to western Libya, as a ship with medical supplies docked in the besieged town of Misrata.
The Geneva-based organisation added on Saturday that its aid workers were on the way to Zawiyah, 60 kilometres west of the Libyan capital Tripoli.
"We are sending the ship to support Misrata's main hospital, by delivering enough medical supplies to treat 300 patients with weapon injuries on the spot," Jean-Michel Monod, head of the ICRC team now in Tripoli, said in a statement.
The breakthrough came more than a week after the independent humanitarian agency began negotiations with Libyan government officials on access to western areas under its control.
The ICRC is already deployed in rebel-held eastern territory, mainly in the cities of Benghazi and Tobruk.
