Philipp and Brägger through to semi-finals in Edmonton

Swiss 1500m runner Peter Philipp is through to the semi-finals at the World Athletics Championships in Edmonton, Canada, after qualifying as one of the four fastest losers in the first round heats.

Philipp, who is competing in his first outdoor world championships, grabbed the penultimate qualifying spot in a time of 3 minutes 39.20 seconds.

Meanwhile his compatriot Anita Brägger also had a successful day's work in her first round heat of the women's 800m, finishing in sixth place in a time 2 minutes 0.65 seconds.

Brägger, who had failed to make her mark in previous international competitions, has been running well this season. She beat the two-minute mark for the first time at this year's Athletissima meeting in Lausanne.
