The 39-year-old finished in 39.95 seconds behind Michelle Stilwell from Canada (36.18) and Tomomi Yamaki from Japan (37.44) on Thursday.

Schmid, a biomedical analyst from Lucerne, is hoping to go one or two better in the sprints, her main disciplines.

On Wednesday Quadriplegic athlete Beat Bösch won silver in the men's 200m discipline.

Switzerland is aiming for at least 11 medals from its 26 athletes competing in Beijing. China is nearly certain to top the medal table, as it did in Athens when it came first with 141 medals.
