May 1, Zurich Keystone

This year unions reminded demonstrators of the success of the so-called fat-cat initiative, accepted by a majority of Swiss voters in March and aimed at curbing manager salaries and increasing shareholder rights. Union leaders also called on citizens to support initiatives in favour of better salaries for all and pensions.

May 1 is traditionally Labour Day for much of Europe and coincides with International Workers' Day.
