New York court dismisses Hingis' suit
A United States judge has dismissed a lawsuit filed by Swiss tennis star, Martina Hingis, against the Italian sportswear group, Sergio Tacchini.
The Manhattan Supreme Court ruled that the $40 million case could not be tried in the US as it is already pending in Italy.
The 21-year-old and her mother claimed that Tacchini shoes might be behind Hingis' recurring foot injuries.
In June last year, Hingis filed a $40 million (SFr60 million) lawsuit against Tacchini, claiming that she had been provided with "defective" shoes "unsuitable for competition".
However, the Milan-based company issued a statement in May this year, saying that Hingis' claims were "groundless remarks" that could lead to civil and penal liabilities.
In granting Tacchini's motion to dismiss, the court said that the Milan lawsuit concerns the same issues as in the New York action, and that it would be "unjust, unfair and inconvenient" to require the defendant to answer here.
