The 48-year-old Argentinian announced his resignation just two days after Switzerland's 1-0 World Cup qualifying defeat at home to Slovenia on June 6. He immediately left for his homeland and was widely expected to join Independiente.

Trossero is reported to have signed a one-year contract for $600,000. His first objective will be to halt the slide of the once mighty Buenos Aires club, which only avoided relegation by a single point last season.

Despite the setback of the Slovenia defeat, Switzerland are still hoping to qualify for the World Cup finals under the guidance of Trossero's successor Köbi Kuhn.
