Transalpine tunnel breakthrough

Miners have succeeded in the breakthrough of the Mount Ceneri tunnel in southern Switzerland. The 15.4km long tunnel is a key part of the network of tunnels providing a high-speed rail connection between northern and southern Europe. The largest tunnel at 57km – the Gotthard Base Tunnel – will open later this year. The Ceneri will not be ready before 2020. (SRF/swissinfo.ch)
