Xeno Müller, Switzerland's 1996 Olympic champion in the single sculls has qualified for Sunday's final of the Rowing World Cup regatta in Vienna.

Müller won his semi-final race on Saturday in seven minutes 37.52 seconds - three seconds ahead of Italy's Nicola Sartori, whose time was also good enough for a place in the final.

But Müller will face tough competition in Sunday's race. He'll be up against none other than the 1998 and 99 world champion, Rob Waddell, and Slovenia's Itzok Cop, the world number one from 1995. Cop edged across the finish line ahead of Waddell in their semi-final duel, serving notice that he's back on form.

Müller's qualification for the final has assured him a spot on the Swiss Olympic team.

Two other Swiss crews also qualified for the finals in their respective categories.

The brothers Markus and Michael Gier won their semi-final in the lightweight doubles in a close finish with a Danish crew. The other Swiss pair in the race, Nicolas Lätt and Michael Bänninger came fifth.

In the semi-final for the women's lightweight doubles, Kim Plugge and Pia Vogel, beat a crew from China by a two second margin.
