The world number 10 was roundly beaten in three sets in the third round, 6-1, 6-3, 6-3, by the number 6, Britain's Andy Murray.

The Swiss, who was playing his 200th match as a professional, has never progressed to the final eight in a grand slam.

Meanwhile Switzerland's top woman tennis player, Patty Schnyder, has advanced to the quarterfinals at Flushing Meadows.

On Monday she beat Katarina Srebotnik of Slovenia 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, setting up a meeting with Elena Dementieva of Russia, the number five seed on Tuesday.

Roger Federer, the world number 2, is also playing on Tuesday, when he is due to meet the Russian Igor Andreev.
