Minister intervenes for held activist
Switzerland’s foreign minister has intervened to ensure a Swiss Greenpeace activist being held in Copenhagen receives post and family visits.
The Zurich man was arrested on December 17for trying to gatecrash an official dinner for heads of state at the United Nations climate change conference.
He was taken into custody where he will remain until a scheduled court appearance on January 17.
Micheline Calmy-Rey called her Danish counterpart after reports that the man had only been able to contact his family in a restricted way.
A representative of the Swiss embassy in Copenhagen has visited the man several times since his arrest to ensure he has a lawyer and that he has been held in suitable conditions.
Greenpeace members protested outside the Danish consulate in Geneva on Wednesday and waved a banner calling for the man’s release from prison, the organisation said in a statement.
