A teenager from canton Ticino has been hospitalised with meningitis. It comes less than a month after another Swiss girl died of the brain disease, and is the latest in a series of cases in the region.

The seventeen year old girl was taken to Mendrisio hospital on Friday, where it was confirmed she was suffering from a virulent strain of meningitis. However, her life is not thought to be in danger.

Fellow students at her school have been given antibiotics as a precaution.

It comes a little over two weeks after a girl from canton Fribourg died suddenly from the disease after developing acute blood poisoning.

There have now been five cases of meningitis in canton Ticino alone since the beginning of the year. Nine cases were reported in the region during the whole of 1999.

Earlier this month a baby and two schoolchildren contracted the illness, although all of them recovered.

The disease reached record levels across the whole of Switzerland last year. There were 168 reported cases, an increase of 40 per cent over 1998. Around ten per cent of cases are fatal.
