The Swiss 30 year-old had a tough first set against the Briton, eight years his junior and ranked a lowly 137. Only after the set went to a tiebreak did Rosset clinch it, 7-6.

The second set was just as tense, with Rosset finally breaking Parmar's serve and winning 7-5. But the Geneva-born player managed to dominate his opponent in the third and final set, which he took 6-3.

Rosset currently boasts a world ranking of 33. His highest position was number nine, back in 1995, a year before he took the gold medal at the Barcelona Olympic Games.

The player first made it into the third round at Wimbledon in 1990, two years after turning professional, and repeated the achievement in 1992 and 1996.

He faces Germany's Tommy Haas, ranked 23, in his next match. Haas himself is into the third round for the third consecutive year.

The pair have met three times since 1998, and Rosset leads the German by two matches to one.
