Sunday's matches were part of a four-team semi-final round with only one side progressing to January's finals in Zurich.

Lugano swept past Kiev with a final score of 7-4 (3-1 4-2 0-1), but Ambri had a tougher struggle against the German side, losing 1-3 (0-1 0-1 1-1).

The Munich squad now head the group, with Lugano in second position and Ambri - who have won the Continental Cup for the last two years - in third.

A Swiss team has already booked its place in the finals of the tournament, to be held between January 12 and 14. League champions, Zurich Lions, have been given an automatic place as the tournament's hosts.

The Continental Cup is second only to the Super Cup in terms of European club hockey.
