That’s according to Swiss Environment, Transport and Energy Minister Doris Leuthard, who spoke at a forum on the topic in Lucerne on Monday.

“It is up to all of us to create a viable alliance for sustainable development in the three-way partnership between cities, the countryside and the mountains,” said Leuthard.

She pointed out how the diverse areas were linked through transport, energy and food supply networks, and cited spatial planning as a particular challenge.

Leuthard also said that each region had different strengths and functions and that it was these things that made Switzerland the place that it is.

Organised by the Federal Spatial Development Office, the forum for sustainable development takes place twice a year.
