The sunny skies also brought holiday-makers onto the streets of Lugano (pictured), where the temperatures also went above the "summer mark" of 25 degrees. But the centre of Switzerland was the best place for sizzling, with Basel joined by Kloten (26 degrees) and Lucerne (25.2 degrees).

The hottest Easter in almost forty years should not be seen as further proof of global warming, however, since there are no fixed dates for the Easter weekend. This year's Easter is particularly late. The corresponding hot-spell in 1962 came just one day earlier in the calendar year.
