Kratochvil, ranked 77th, beat Spain's Alberto Martin, seeded sixth, in straight sets 6-0, 6-4.

The Spaniard, a claycourt specialist, struggled from the outset on the grass court. He lost the first ten games before making a shortlived comeback in the sixth game of the second set.

Martin broke Kratochvil's serve and then won his next two service games pulling the score up to 5-4. But the 22 year-old Swiss player was undeterred and fought back to clinch a 6-4 victory.
