Italians take top spots on day 12 of Tour of Spain

Italy's Alessandro Petacchi has sprinted to his second victory of this year's Tour of Spain in the 12th stage on Thursday. Spain's Angel Casero held on to the leader's jersey while the Swiss, Alex Zülle, remained further down the overall standings.

The powerfully built Petacchi, opened up a two-metre lead on his rivals and successfully held off the challenge from his compatriots Giovanni Lombardi and Stefano Casagranda.

Rolf Huser clocked in the best Swiss finish. He came in 20th, while Alex Zülle, who previously led the tour, finished 111th.

In the overall standings, Oscar Camenzind is the best placed Swiss in 16th spot while Alex Zülle is in 32nd position. The Spaniard, Roberto Heras, is in second position overall, followed by his compatriot Igor Gonzalez de Galdeano.
