The information and communications technology fair Orbit 99 opens its doors to the public Tuesday, featuring the latest trends and newest products and services from nearly 1,300 exhibitors.

The five-day event in the city of Basel is titled “Business today for business tomorrow” and showcases present and future technologies in this booming industrial sector.

Trade visitors as well as the average technology buff will be able to see and hear the latest about the Internet, digital technology, networking, e-commerce, mobile communications and lots more.

Orbit visitors will probably be fascinated by exhibition’s multimedia section, which is dedicated to the latest applications for home use, including digital technology for audio, video and photography.

Other sections of Orbit 99 target the business community: IT solutions for small and medium-sized business enterprises, roundtable business strategy talks and exhibitor presentations all feature in that sector.

A special presentation named “Business meets Science” showcases research projects and results from Swiss engineering schools and universities. Participants include the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, the Swiss National Science Foundation and the St. Gallen School of Economics.

Those institutions, for instance, present visitors with a sophisticated educational software for geometry, practical applications of virtual world tools (such as a remote-controlled robot on Mars) or examples of computer game technology.
