It was only the second time the Swiss star had met Stevenson on court, the first time being back in 1999 when Hingis also defeated the 20-year-old American at Indian Wells in straight sets (6-3, 6-4).

Hingis will now go on to meet the winner of the tie between Australian hopeful, Nicole Pratt (WTA 74), and Japan's Ai Sugiyama (WTA 48).
