Hingis moves step closer to elusive French crown
Martina Hingis has breezed into the semi-finals of the French Open, taking less than an hour to sweep aside the unseeded American, Chanda Rubin. Hingis won the match in straight sets, 6-1 6-3.
Now only two games stand between Switzerland's World No. 1 and her bid to capture the French Open crown -- the only Grand Slam title that has eluded her. It is also Hingis' last chance to win the event as a teenager, with her 20th birthday looming later this year.
However, she faces a tough semi-final encounter with her doubles partner, Mary Pierce, who is displaying some sparkling form. With her home crowd firmly behind her, the French player produced a string of powerful baseline shots to overcome her quarter-final opponent, Monica Seles.
The stage is now set for a match which many expect to be one of the highlights of this year's tournament.
