Hingis overpowered her opponent to take the match 6-1, 6-4. But she showed signs of nerves in the second set allowing Hrdlikova to pull back two games when she was 5-2 down.

However, Hingis then broke serve again to wrap up the match. She meets Sandrine Testud of France in the next round. Hingis has never lost to Testud in their 10 meetings to date.

Hingis expressed optimism about her encounter with Testud. "I remember the match against her two years ago when I won 6-4 in the third set. But I have never lost to her and I hope I can keep the score like that."

Luck was not on the side of her compatriot, Lorenzo Manta. He was defeated in the third round of his ATP tournament match in Washington by Germany's Nicolas Kiefer 5-7, 6-4, 6-4.
