As the communications ministry announced on Thursday, the postal and telecom companies were successful in reaching their targets. But it said that the railways' track record was less good.

In particular, its struggling cargo division had a negative effect on other areas of business.

Although the rail company achieved its punctuality targets, passengers complained about untidy trains and a lack of seating on busy routes.

In 2009, Swiss Post delivered more than 98 per cent of its mail on time – compared with 96 per cent in 2008.

Swisscom also received good marks for remaining a market leader and pleasing its customers.
