Geneva airport closed until Thursday
Geneva airport will remain closed until 6am on Thursday because of heavy snowfall, the airport authorities said.
Passengers are asked not to come to the airport. The Euroairport that services Basel was also closed, while Zurich airport reported delays and cancellations.
The Geneva airport was first closed to air traffic on Tuesday evening. Those wanting to travel were offered accommodation in the Geneva region as there were no rooms free in the city.
Around 200 stranded air passengers spent the night in emergency shelters, with a further 100 sleeping in the airport after buses and taxis could not serve the airport. Buses are now running, it has been announced.
Zurich airport reported delays and cancelations on the day many VIPs, including former US President Bill Clinton, were travelling to FIFA's headquarters in Zurich to push bids to host the 2018 and 2022 football World Cups.
The presence of so many private jets meant that the airport had been forced to turn down requests for diverted landings.
The snow is expected to let up during the day on Thursday.
