A federal railways spokesman confirmed that legal proceedings had begun against the 35-year-old Swiss man, who worked in the organisation's accounts department.

The spokesman said the case had been uncovered during routine bookkeeping audits.

The man is alleged to have taken the money over a period of time last year, before resigning from his job. He has been in Brazil with his Brazilian wife and their two children since December.

The man, contacted by the "SonntagsBlick" newspaper, denied and wrongdoing.
