Foreign tourists make "dream year" for hotels
Switzerland's hotel association has called the 2007-08 season a "dream year" for business but admits it is feeling the effects of a global economic slowdown.
Overnight stays rose 3.7 per cent, cracking the 37-million mark, according to hotelleriesuisse. Stays in the summer season were up 1.8 per cent, which the organisation attributed to the bad economy.
The number of foreign visitors, who make up the majority of hotel occupants, rose 4.2 per cent, while domestic demand increased 3.1 per cent.
The average length of stay increased to 2.3 days, but hotelleriesuisse said that while foreign visitors stayed longer, domestic guests shortened their stays.
The association said its 2,274 members generated 76 per cent of overnight stays.
