Foreign police to provide added Euro security
Switzerland has signed an agreement with the German authorities paving the way for German police to reinforce their Swiss colleagues during Euro 2008.
The deal signed on Saturday foresees German police from the states of Baden-Württemberg and Hessen deploying to host cities Basel and Zurich during the European football championships in June.
A similar deal was reached with France at the beginning of April, which calls for French officers to assist their Swiss colleagues in Geneva.
In total, up to 1,000 German and French police will be deployed to Switzerland.
The Swiss parliament approved the move in 2006, which will cost taxpayers SFr6.5 million ($6.49 million).
Up to 15,000 Swiss soldiers will also provide security and logistical support during the championships, co-hosted by Switzerland and Austria.
